The Department of Medicine started functioning at KIMS from August 2004 with a limited number of faculty and facilities. In the last 17 years, it has consistently grown to the current state to become a vibrant Post Graduate Department of General Medicine with a large number of experienced and distinguished faculty members, supported by state of the art infrastructure.

The department is headed by Prof Sudhansu Sekhar Panda, an astute clinician, teacher, researcher and administrator with over 45 years of professional experience. He has served for 27 years in the Armed Forces Medical Services with vast experience in clinical, academic, research and administrative domains. He is very empathetic towards patients and quite student friendly.

The first batch of MBBS students were admitted in 2007 with 100 students. Currently the intake is 250 students per batch. Post Graduate program in medicine has started in 2017 and 2 batches MD (General Medicine) have already passed out. The department has 10 recognized MD seats per batch.

The department has 8 units with 240 beds. The key areas of focus are patient care, academics and research. In addition to a busy OPD and general inpatient, the department also runs a fully equipped 21 bedded medicine ICU with advanced life support facilities including mechanical ventilators, hemodialysis, ECMO. The department also has a 21 bedded well-equipped High Dependency Unit.

The department of medicine manages cases from many domains which include tropical medicine, infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, various cardiac conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine disorders like diabetes, thyroid diseases, adrenal insufficiency, metabolic diseases, neurological conditions, renal diseases, rheumatological conditions and various autoimmune conditions, hematological conditions like different types of anemias, platelet and white cell disorders.

Academic activities include regular bedside teaching for undergraduates and post graduates, regular case presentations, seminars, journal club, faculty lectures and guest lectures from national and international faculties.

In order to facilitate adequate clinical exposure to various specialties like cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, nephrology, endocrinology, rheumatology, the PG residents are attached to these departments to further enhance their skills with hands on experience. All PG residents are posted to ICU in rotation to enable them to learn various critical skills like endotracheal intubation, central line insertion and bedside echo and ultrasound.

Interdepartmental teaching activities like clinico-radiological seminars and clinico-pathological seminars are conducted regularly including CMEs. The Department will be conducting 41st APICON-Odisha on 18th & 19th December 2021and a pre-conference work shop on 17th Dec 2021, Under the chairmanship of HOD Medicine.

Research and publications is a key area of focus. The institute has a full-fledged Department of Research with biostatisticians. Regular training program in research methodology are conducted.

The faculty of the department have many publications in Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed and other indexed journals.

The Post Graduate wing of the department has more than 100 presentations in various national and international conferences like APICON, RSSDI, ACPCON in the short period of its existence. Our faculty and PG students have received many awards at various conferences:

  • Best free paper at National APICON 2019
  • Best free paper at National APICON 2020
  • Best podium presentation at RSSDI 2019
  • Best poster presentation at RSSDI 2019
  • Icon excellence award at ICON SWM 2019

The PG residents are actively encouraged and supported for paper writing and presentations at various conferences.

KIMS was the first institute to start a 500 bedded dedicated COVID hospital with the support of the Government of Odisha and OMC. We have managed about 1700 COVID beds at 7 locations. The Department of Medicine had a major contribution in this.

The Department boasts of some of the best faculties in Medicine. There are 9 highly experienced professors, 3 Associate Professors, adequate number of well-motivated Assistant Professors and Senior Residents.

The Department has the motto to treat with empathy, teach with dedication and research with passion.
