Department of Community Medicine boasts of a robust, very enterprising and motivated faculty led by doyens of the field, Professors who have headed in the premier government colleges of Odisha , The department has spearheaded the latest CISP and MEU curriculum implementation in the recent batches.It also offers batch wise trainings to the faculty of all colleges of Odisha under MEU programme, in conjunction with the state of art center, SCB, Cuttack. Department offers a holistic mix of lecture as well as community based teaching and learning experience for undergraduates, churned out in a scheduled manner during the course of its visits to the Urban Health &Training Centre(UHTC) and Rural Health & Training Center(RHTC), besides visits to government run PHC and CHCs. The underserved rural and urban population in catchment areas under the Department get primary health care package as well as health promotional services free of cost with regular follow ups. Smooth referrals are also organized to the main hospital to ameliorate their health concerns.Learning with hands on experience is the motto of the department, which since inception has brought a breeze of informative touch to the otherwise theoretical curriculum , by celebrating most of the Health Days and regularly organizing seminars, conferences, workshops etc. On the research front, the faculty on an annual basis add to the indexed (PUBMED/SCOPUS) score of the institute in appreciable numbers. Faculties of this dept. have been conferred the prestigious ICMR recognition as “Faculty to have published maximally among underserved populations” for year 2019-2020 and also contributed to prestigious BMJ publication on Covid in India in 2020, to mention a few. The department has a sustained legacy of taking up nationally acclaimed projects of UNCEF IMNCI, Inclen and Professional Development Course (PDC) for senior level district officials in the country, which had a successful run of 2 batches in his time. It has been stalled for the Covid pandemic but we look forward to host these batches again. It is a key stakeholder in any national or state run programme and contributes to the National Health goals.Research projects have also been managed from the department; 3 ICMR grants projects (in the current year 2020-21) and the Clinical Epidemiology Unit (CEU ) now boasts of managing some of the best regulatory trials under (Typhoid and ICMR SII COVOVAX, to name a few). Our midline faculty are ably managing the Covid vaccination for health workers and then elderly; our members in Institutional EC, besides revolutionizing the functioning of the Immunization clinic and departmental affairs. The department has one of the finest library, museums in this part of the country and are the constant contributors of ICMR STS project guides. During Covid pandemic also the department offered one of the finest online teaching programs to prevent any discontinuation in the MBBS teaching. It offers one of the best PG course teaching too as the students gain unique unparalleled experience in terms of academic and research opportunities besides enjoying the facilities of the department and institute.
