DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRICS
The Department of Paediatrics has specialized wards such Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU),
Paediatric newborn not only from Bhubaneswar/ Cuttack but Intensive Care Unit (PICU),
besides general ward, Infectious Disease ward and special cabins children.
PICU :
Sophisticated 10 bedded PICU is one of its the kind in Odisha with Paediatrics Intensivist and
dedicated equipped with ultra-modern facilities including bed side monitor,
ventilators, ABG analyzer, central monitoring unit, etc.
NICU :
The 20 bedded NICU is fully equipped Level-III NICU facilities for Medical as well as surgical needs
and provides round the clock intensive care by
qualified & dedicated neonatologists and highly skilled nursing staff.
PATIENT STORY OF PAEDIATRIC DEPARTMENT :
A patient named Piyali Priyadarshini, 7yr HF was admitted in KIMS on 24.08.2015 with complain of detoriation of speech
and difficulty in hand writing for last 2 months. It is associated with vomiting and constipation.
Patient got admitted to KIMS paediatrics ward and treated on the line of Encephalitis .
Haematological & Biochemical investigation revealed no abnormality.
MRI shows hyperintesification of medial temporal lobe, hippocampal & Perihippocampal region.
Other investigation like ANA,T3 T4 TSH, HSV are negative except Protein S functional deficiency. Homocystine, antithrombin activity ,
serum cupper & EEG are normal. Patient discharged in stable condition but referred to NIMANHS Bangaluru for more workup.
There they evaluated for anti NMDA antibody and VGKC antibodies which comes negative, patient refer backed to KIMS with advise.
As the child become more restless and hyperactive and weakness of Rt side ,
slurring of speech , tremor & vomiting again got admitted to Paediatric ward . Multidisciplinary approach was taken involving Psychiatry & nephrology.
A rare case of autoimmune encephalitis was diagnosed and treated with Plasmapheresis. Gradually pt shows signs of improvement. Later on discharged in good condition.
